Because many trees still had not entirely shed their leaves, Central Park might lose as many as 1000 trees that could topple under the combined weight of snow clinging to the leaves, which already snapped branches and can possibly fell entire trees.
The governors of New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts declared states of emergencies Saturday, but New York's governor, Andrew Cuomo limited his state of emergency declaration to thirteen counties in the northern area of the state. Michael McCarthy, a former Navy medic and protester camped in the tent city near City Hall in Providence, R.I., told the Associated Press, "Everyone's been calling it our Valley Forge moment. Everybody thought that George Washington couldn't possibly survive in the Northeast." Occupy Wall Street protesters also endured the winds and wet snow that made life more difficult in their encampment.
