Ham on Wry Award-All American Troops Will Leave Iraq by Year's End
Posted on 12:29 by Unknown
Sound the trumpets and dance in the streets! Finally, Ham on Wry can share some good news with readers on a Friday afternoon. Earlier today, President Obama announced that all remaining troops in Iraq will return home by the end of the year. That should make January 1, 2012 a special New Year for all of us, especially those who have loved ones serving there.
Unfortunately, over 4,400 troops have lost their lives since the conflict began in March 2003, and many of those who have left Iraq, did so at the price of a limb or severe burns or post traumatic stress syndrome. For the almost 40,000 military men and women who will be returning by December 31st, our nation should plan a rousing celebration for each group as it arrives. The only troops who will remain there are assigned to the US Embassy.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki learned the news in a video conference with President Obama this morning. The United States and Iraq failed to agree on the conditions under which a small number of troops would remain in Iraq after the withdrawal. Increasing political pressure forced the decision, although Obama said that he will continue discussions with Maliki about using American military personnel to train Iraqi's armed forces.
Ham on Wry hopes that the U. S. provides heightened security measures in the interim that will prevent any further losses and a safe journey home to all.
