Maria del Rosario Cayetana Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Francisca Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva, the most titled of all European royals, married her third husband, Alfonso Diez, October 5th at her home in Seville, Spain. Cayetana, the Duchess of Alba, as she is commonly known, chose a man 25 years her junior who works as a civil servant. They dated for three years before deciding to "tie the knot." Both of her previous husbands died, but the duchess did not allow that to deter her from falling in love again.
Carlos, the Duke of Huéscar, escorted his mother up the aisle, although he had doubts about the marriage. Two of her six children were notably absent from the ceremony. One of her sons and his wife left on vacation rather than attend the wedding, and her daughter was in the hospital. In total, thirty friends and relatives watched as the Duchess of Alba and Diez said their vows.
After the wedding, several hundred onlookers applauded and cheered as the duchess kicked off her shoes, lifted her salmon-colored dress, and danced the flamenco, one of Spain's most famous dances. Her new husband smiled in approval and allowed her the full limelight.
Prior to the big day, the duchess divided up the inheritance among her children to placate them and quell their objections to the union. Diez will be entering a world with which he has little familiarity, but he has reportedly signed a document renouncing any claim to Fitz-James Stuart's wealth, in order to prove that he married for love and not money.
Ah, the wonders of true love! Commoners marrying royalty have captured many headlines this year. May they all live "happily ever after."
