A panel of three female judges sentenced Joran van der Sloot Friday to 28 years in prison for killing Stephany Flores in Peru May 30, 2010 and ordered him to pay the Flores family 200,000 nuevos soles (approximately $75,000 US) in civil damages. No smug smiles appeared on his face during this hearing, unlike his past appearances in court. Instead, he was visibly shaken and wiped away tears, as the stark reality of his fate settled on the somber-faced 24-year-old.
Van der Sloot said he would appeal the decision that will keep him locked up until June 2038, although he could be released sooner for good behavior.
Prison authorities told the AP after the hearing that Van der Sloot had been transferred to the high-security Piedras Gordas prison in northern Lima to serve his sentence. The Flores family loudly complained that he had enjoyed privileges like television, internet access and a cell phone in Castro Castro prison. In his new home, van der Sloot will enjoy the company of other violent criminals, including organized crime bosses and terrorists.
Spokesperson Janeth Sanchez stated that he will have his own cell at Piedras Gordas and will not have access to the same type of facilities or privileges he had when in Castro Castro prison. Van der Sloot can no longer manipulate his way out of punishment. Ham on Wry doubts whether he will use his incarceration to rehabilitate himself. He has never shown signs of remorse for killing Flores or in his actions in the Natalee Holloway disappearance and seems incapable of doing so.
