Parijat Saha, who earns a monthly salary roughly equivalent to $700 US teaching in West Bengal, India, checked his bank account online Sunday night, expecting to see a balance of approximately 10,000 rupees ($200). Instead, his account reflected $9.8 billion in available funds.
After the initial shock, Saha realized that his billionaire status must have been a mistake, so he checked at an ATM that showed the same balance. He called the State Bank of India Monday to report the error. Bank officials had no explanation for what happened, but assured depositors that he couldn't have withdrawn the money because it hadn't cleared.
When BBC contacted Subhashish Karmakar, chief manager of the bank's branch in Balurghat near Saha's home, he declined to speak about the source of the funds or how the money got into Mr Saha's account, stating, "I have been specifically asked not to comment on this issue."
Saha revealed his sense of humor when he told the press, "I called up a friend in the bank and joked, maybe money is overflowing in your bank, that's why your system has remitted so much money into my account."
Oh well, "easy come, easy go," as the aphorism states. Maybe the bank will reward him for his honesty, but I doubt it will make him a true billionaire.
