The First Amendment to the US Constitution states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." From that sentence, various interpretations have evolved with respect to the role religion can play in government. Given the Bill of Rights in its entirety, how abortion became an issue for the Supreme Court to decide still mystifies me?
We live in a culture that embodies almost every religion in the world, yet abortion opponents expect our citizens to act in a single-minded fashion with respect to a woman's right to have an abortion. Doesn't that constitute an infringement on the woman's right to choose whether to continue the pregnancy? Will the so-called pro-lifers, then, step in and ensure that children born to women who wanted to abort are fed, clothed, and cared for in a healthy manner? The answer to that is a resounding no. They cite the commandment "Thou Shalt Not Kill," as the reason they object to abortion. Here's where the schizophrenia most directly applies. Do they also object to killing enemy soldiers in war or harming innocent bystanders in an air raid? Perhaps some do, but most don't see an association between the two. Both constitute killing in their minds, but one is acceptable (killing in war); the other is not (abortion). The fact that some people justify the murder of doctors who perform abortions illustrates the absolute insanity surrounding the abortion issue. The same people who quote "Thou shalt not kill" must have forgotten that the Bible also has this passage: "Vengeance is mine," sayeth the Lord. Therefore, if one believes in a literal Bible, s/he would leave the doctor's punishment to God.
I have a suggestion for all pro-lifers. Stop wasting your time on abortion and work on child advocacy. Child abuse, child pornography, child abandonment, child trafficking--all of these and more damage and kill thousands of children each year. Spend your time on children who are already born and suffer in the hands of parents who don't want them and treat them like chattel. If people believes in the value of life, as pro-lifers say they do, then should they not value the life of all children who are alive? I rest my case. Schizophrenia reigns!
