Defense Rests in Casey Anthony Trial

Posted on 14:45 by Unknown

Casey Anthony confirmed her decision not to testify when Judge Belvin Perry inquired if that was her decision, adding that she had made the decision freely and voluntarily.   Prosecutors will now call rebuttal witnesses to the stand.  Despite the hype and drama surrounding this trial, the prosecution could only offer circumstantial evidence to prove its case against Anthony.

The defense strategy consisted mainly in casting doubt on the prosecution's claim that Anthony killed her daughter using duct tape to block her breathing  Anthony's attorney emphasized that the state had no witnesses who observed the killing, and no irrefutable proof that the child suffocated.  The defense claimed that Caylee had drowned accidentally in the swimming pool at Anthony's parents' home and that Casey's father had helped her dispose of the body, which he resolutely denied.  However, the biggest shocker came early in the case when the defense told the jury that Casey had behaved so irreverently after Caylee's death because George Anthony had sexually abused her, thus creating an emotional problem.  This case had more twists and turns than a race course.

For those readers who have consistently followed this case, other strange details held their interest, such as the final defense witness, Krystal Holloway, stating the she and George Anthony had an affair or the prosecution displaying a bag with "the smell of death" from the car.  The courtroom drama hooked many viewers, who will miss their daily dose of opposing lawyers arguing with one another and an exasperated judge hauling them into his chambers.  Jurors must now sift through all of the evidence and determine the fate of Casey Anthony.  No matter what verdict they render, this case will most likely wind up on the big screen.  After all, someone has to make money on this tragedy.

Javiar Colon Wins The Voice

Posted on 18:17 by Unknown

A few minutes ago, Javiar Colon captured the most votes to win $100,000 and a recoding contract on The Voice.  Coach Adam Levine was clearly emotional in praising him after his duet with Stevie Nicks and overcome with joy when Carson Daly announced that Javiar triumphed over Dia Frampton, who was with 2 percentage points of Javiar's total.

This will give the clear-voiced Colon a second chance at a recording contract.  His smooth presentation and near perfect pitch allows him to move between crooning and belting out a pop song.  He proved his talent every time he sang, and voters recognized a star in the making.  So much for my prediction last week that Beverly McClellan would emerge the victor.  I don't think we've seen the last of her, Dia, or Vicci Martinez.  Each gave performances worthy of awards during the competition.   Enough said.

Christine Legarde Wins Top Spot at IMP

Posted on 19:38 by Unknown

Christine Lagarde, French Finance Minister, will serve as the managing director of the IMF starting July 5th.  She is the first woman to head the IMF and also its first leader who isn't an economist, a testimony to the accomplishments she has to her credit.  Her appointment does continue the tradition of a European at the helm of the organization, to which some nations object.  However, she is expected to use her tough negotiation skills and ability to close deals to her advantage in her new role.

Lagarde will immediately face a tough situation in dealing with a possible Greek default that has caused rioting in Athens and angst around the world.  Reuters reports that Legarde said on TFI, "If I have one message tonight about Greece, it is to call on the Greek political opposition to support the party that is currently in power in a spirit of national unity,"  Her position demands neutrality, as she no longer has total focus on French concerns.  She must prove that she can transcend national interests and concentrate on solving a problem that has the potential of bringing down the global economy.

The Washington Post states that the former chairman of the Baker & McKenzie law firm "will take over a global institution that is playing an increasingly central role in managing the world economic crisis, with tens of billions of dollars in loans outstanding and supporting credit lines available to keep countries out of trouble.  Lagarde played a central role in crafting an initial round of plans to help Greece as a representative of the French government. She’ll now be renegotiating much of that as head of the IMF."

Part of Lagarde's statement to the board of the IMF promised, “If elected, I will have but one thing in mind when it comes to providing support to a euro-area member: ensuring full consistency with the Fund’s mission and providing for good stewardship of the Fund’s resources.  I will not shrink from the necessary candor and toughness in my discussions with the European leaders, on the contrary.”

Bonne chance, Christine Lagarde.  You'll need that along with the courage and conviction to handle the complexities of the IMF successfully.

Outrageous TSA Search at Florida Airport

Posted on 12:43 by Unknown

Lena Reppert, a 95-year-old, wheelchair-bound woman suffering from leukemia suffered further under the handling of TSA at Northwest Regional Airport in Florida Saturday.  They took her adult diaper during a search.  Since she had no spare, she was forced to fly without underwear to Grand Rapids, MI, on her way to Hastings to live with relatives.  Her daughter Jean Weber accompanied her to a restroom to remove the diaper after the TSA agent searching Mrs. Reppert reported that she felt something suspicious and took Weber's mother to a private room, where Weber wasn't allowed.  An agent came out and said the Depends garment was "wet and it was firm, and they couldn't check it thoroughly."  Hence, the trip to the bathroom.

Whew!  I can now breathe a sigh of relief that dangerours 95-year-olds in wheelchairs will no longer pose a threat to the airlines with TSA on the job.

Mrs. Reppert remained calm throughout the ordeal, but Weber sobbed when TSA demanded the adult diaper be removed.  The whole process took 45 minutes, and, in the chaos, Weber lost her gate pass, so she couldn't accompany her mother to the plane.  Mrs. Reppert commented that she was probably too old to care, and she just wanted to go home.  She will eventually move to an assisted living facility near her relatives.

The TSA released the following statement Sunday.  "While every person and item must be screened before entering the secure boarding area, TSA works with passengers to resolve security alarms in a respectful and sensitive manner.  We have reviewed the circumstances involving this screening and determined that our officers acted professionally and according to proper procedure."  C'mon TSA!  Get real!  How sensitive was it to ask Mrs. Reppert to remove the only adult diaper she had and force her to fly without one?  What kind of danger would a frail, 95-year-old woman pose to passengers?  If this is considered a proper procedure, it is time for the TSA to review all of its policies and procedures and start focusing more on suspicious behavior than treating everyone like a criminal.  I find this entire situation unfathomable and indefensible.

The worst part of this story has yet to be written.  The TSA denies that an officer told Weber that her mother would have to remove her undergarment.  Both mother and daughter say this happened, and, frankly, I believe them.  A friend of mine observed a small child who set off an alarm because she wore braces, and she was forced to remove them.  The mother had two other children in tow, and other passengers watched them during the search.  Stories and videos of many similar situations have frequently appeared.  Own up to your mistakes, TSA!

It is time to place someone in charge of  the TSA who understands the word reasonable.  The intrusive tactics employed in these cases are unwarranted.  Give agents the discretion to decide who really needs the extra precautions.  Of course, that means the TSA must hire people with the capacity to make those decisions and pay them accordingly.  What are the chances of that happening?

The American public deserves better.  No explanation will serve to make this kind of behavior acceptable.

Hu Jia's Release Raises Important Questions for Other Nations

Posted on 10:37 by Unknown

Hu Jia, an outspoken Chinese dissident, was released Sunday after serving three-and-a-half years for the crime of "inciting subversion of state."  Mr. Hu suffers from cirrhosis, and, although his wife Zeng Jinyan was happy he was free, she expressed some concerns about the state of his health to her mother.  Mr. Hu is pictured above left.  The photo on the right shows plainclothes police outside of Hu's home, preventing journalists from interviewing Hu or his wife.  The Chinese government has kept Ms. Zeng under contstant suveillance, since her husband's imprisonment.  "A picture is worth a thousand words."

The United States, as an active trading partner with China, must not remain silent on the human rights abuses that occur there.  Americans have dealt with toxic drywall, contaminated children's toys, and poorly assembled clothing in the cause of maintainging good relations with China.  We face a conundrum that must be handled with diplomancy, but it must be done quickly.  A nation that pridees itself on freedom of speech has an obligation to stand up for the rights of those in other nations whose voices are silenced.

The European Parliament awarded Mr. Hu the Sakharov Prize, the EU's top human rights award, in December 2008.  He couldn't accept the prize in person because he was incarcerated at the time.  Accoriding to BBC news, China's Premier, Wen Jiabao, just happens to be touring Europe at present, giving the Europeans an opportunity to raise the human rights issue face-to-face.  German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has announced that he will address the topic Monday when the Chinese delegation arrives in Berlin.  He plans to emphasize the importance Germany places on "freedom of expression, median freedoms, and human rights."

As part of a global community, the United States has an opportunity to stand with its allies, not on the battlefront, but on the platform of human rights for everyone on the planet.  In the age of blatant meism, we must recognize that a threat to one person's freedom poses a threat to our own.  Bigger does not necessarily mean better.  Sometimes size is measured in the depth of commitment to a principle.  Words have more power than bullets to change the world.  Gandhi proved that decades ago.

"Ham on Wry" Award

Posted on 17:51 by Unknown

Ham on Wry's weekly award goes posthumously to Peter Falk, who died Thursday evening in his home.  For those of you who don't recognize the character in the picture, it is Falk as his most famous character, Columbo.  The disheveled appearance affected by Lieutenant Columbo was designed to lull his suspects into thinking him an absent-minded buffoon.  When questioning them, he often appeared distracted, rambling on about his wife's wisdom or his dog's indiscretions.  Just when the murderer thought s/he had stumped Columbo, he would turn and say, "Just one more thing."  Those words signaled the viewer that Columbo would reveal exactly how the murder was committed.  Columbo ran from 1971-1978 on TV.  After that, it aired about twice a year as TV movies.  That rumpled trench coat Columbo wore actually belonged to Peter Falk, but was replaced after 25 years on television when no longer wearable.  Mr. Falk had been treated for Alzheimer's for a few years, which is believed to be the cause of death.

Peter Falk was an unlikely star, having lost an eye to cancer at the age of 3.   He told the Associated Press in a 1963 interview, "When something like that happens early, you learn to live with it. It became the joke of the neighborhood. If the umpire ruled me out on a bad call, I'd take the fake eye out and hand it to him." At the time he started his acting career in New York, an agent told him he'd never make it in TV or the movies because of his glass eye.  Bad call!  That agent probably rued the day he turned Falk away.

Bet you didn't know that Peter Falk had a master's degree in public administration and worked as an efficiency expert for the state of Connecticut before entering show biz, or that he enjoyed doing charcoal drawings as an avocation.  His acting talent transcended TV, and he appeared on Broadway and in several movies, garnering two Oscar nominations.  He won four Emmys for his portrayal of Columbo.  Audiences loved him because he was an everyman who always solved the case in a bumbling, unassuming manner.

For those who never saw Columbo, I urge you to rent some of the episodes to watch his clever depiction of the main character.  His raspy voice and sloppy appearance made his canny abilities to solve murders ironic.  "Just one more thing."  Good-bye, Peter Falk.  You entertained millions and made them laugh.  Priceless!

Whatever Happened to Men's Style?

Posted on 18:05 by Unknown

This blog offers the following disclaimer:  The comments contained within aim at the segment of men in American society that represent the grunge, gang, or hoodlum style in appearance.  The post does not seek to indict the entire male population of the United States.

Please tell me why men like Brad Pitt wear ridiculous hats and scraggly beards as part of the overall impression they leave on the observer .  Sorry, Brad, but, for years, I thought you were one of the most attractive male stars on the scene.  When I see you wearing shapeless clothes and sporting that beard in the picture above, I must look twice to make certain it's really you.  Brad is not alone in choosing this look as standard dress.  Countless other celebrities do the same.  Ham on Wry prefers men who are well-groomed, as opposed to men who adopt the popular unkempt trend that has lasted far past its expiration date.

We have endured pants so large and baggy that the wearers must swish when they walk, or the pants will fall to their ankles.  Men who wear these atrocious garments usually don oversize t-shirts to complete the ensemble.  Then there's the popular face stubble worn by the supposedly manly man.  Evidently, it's designed to make women swoon at the mere thought of someone with high levels of testosterone nearby.  Trust me, it has the opposite effect.  Who wants to emerge from a romantic interlude with scratches from the wanna be beard?

Is this some kind of insidious plot to undermine the men's fashion industry?  It dominates magazines, TV, movies, music video, and street attire.  Enough already!  May we return to slacks that fit well and either clean-shavem faces or full-grown mustaches or beards?  Please!  Who can admire a man's behind if it's covered in a sloppy shirt over too-large pants?  Give the world a break, guys.  Buy some new clothes that actually fit your body, and leave the slovenly look behind.

"The Voice"--Now That's Entertainment

Posted on 19:11 by Unknown

The Voice offers viewers one of the most refreshing concepts brought to a televised talent contest.  In the first epidsode, judges Christina Aguilara, Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton, and Adam Levine sit on high-backed chairs while contestants perform behind them.  If a judge feels the person has promise, s/he hits a button, and the chair turns 180 degrees, so that the contestant and the judge face one another.  If more than one judge turns, the contestant must choose whose team to join.  Eventually, each team has eight members.  Once the teams are chosen, the judges assume the role of coach to each team member--another unique concept.

I haven't seen every episode, but the staging and performances I did watch absolutely knocked me out.  In many ways, The Voice surpasses Vegas shows because of the variety of songs and styles displayed.  These performers are not yet jaded by fame.  While only one person can win, all of these hopefuls have what it takes to make it in the music business.  Viewers are seeing tomorrow's stars as they enjoy the show.

A few minutes ago, the semi-finals concluded, with one member of each team chosen to progress to the finals.  Blake and Christina used the same strategy in giving both remaining team members a score of 50 out of 100 each.  Cee Lo split 51 to 49, and Adam gave Javiar Colon 65 and Casey Weston 35.  Levine said he did that to ensure that Javiar would advance to the finals, since he's been in the business for several years already.  He told Casey that she is just 18, and  he assured her she will eventually have a successful singing career.

Christina's finalist, Beverly McClellan, commands the stage with her energetic rock performances, reminiscent in some ways of Janis Joplin.  Adam's strategy paid off, although Javiar would have won anyway, without Adam's help.  Blake's finalist, Dia Frampton, has talent as a musician and songwriter, in addition to her singing ability.  But Vicci Martinez, Cee Lo's protoge, projects one of the most powerful voices on the show.  Each finalist has a style different from the others, so it's difficult to predict the outcome.  I'll take a chance and choose Beverly as the one who will win it all.  In appearance, she's an unlikely star.  She sports numerous tattoos and has no hair, but she can turn an audience on the minute she steps on stage.  Don't miss next week's show!  The final episode is guaranteed to keep you smiling and might even spur you to jump out of your seat and cheer for your favorite.

Eva Gabrielson Discusses Stieg Larsson's Literary Legacy

Posted on 15:05 by Unknown

Stieg Larssoon's live-in companion of thirty-two years, Eva Gabrielson spoke with Savannah Guthrie on the Today Show about her claim to some of the fortune amassed from his Milennium Trilogy after his death in 2004.  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the first novel of the trilogy, introduced readers to Lisbeth Salander, the girl to which the title refers, and Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who eventually hires Salander to help him solve a decades-old murder.  To date, Gabrileson has not received a dime of the over $40,000,000 profit from book sales and movie deals.

Gabrielson is visiting the US to promote her book There Are Things I Want You to Know about Stieg Larsson and Me.  She writes in a straightforward tone and terse, unadorned style, according to NY Times writer Charles McGrath.  He also asserts that conspiracy theorists who didn't believe that Larsson had the talent to pen the Milennium Trilogy will find nothing in her book to substantiate that notion.  McGrath explains, in some detail, a part of her book that discusses a Viking curse she called forth "on New Year’s Eve 2004 against all her and Larsson’s enemies: the false friends, the cowards 'who let Stieg fight your battles while you raked in the salaries of your cushy jobs,' the wearers of 'suits, ties and wingtips,' ' the evil ones 'who plotted, spied and stirred up prejudice'.” Rather than sacrifice a live horse as custom dictates, Eva Gabrielsson broke a ceramic horse sculpture in two and tossed it into Stockholm’s Lake Malaren. She fervently believes it worked.

Savannah Guthrie asked Ms. Gabrielson why she and Larsson had never married.  She responded that he was involved in writing against the extreme right-wing, so, for security reasons, everything was placed in her name to protect him from people who might want to harm him.  Larsson's father and brother inherited his estate, although he was estranged from them for years.  Sweden has no provision for common law marriage, and Gabrielson has been locked in a battle with his relatives over the money since his death.  How can a country with such a liberal lifestyle have such antiquated laws when it comes ot marriage?  The time has come for Sweden to enter the 21st Century and recognize the alternative ways of living today.

Ms. Gabrielson reveals that about two hundred pages of a fourth novel reside on his computer and has never been printed.  She expresses doubts that a ghost writer could finish the novel, because Larsson's other novels contained about six hundres pages each.  She contends that another writer would find it difficult to take over the characters and plot.  I read the Millenium Trilogy and was immediately hooked, to the point I read until bleary-eyed, and millions of people around the world have had the same reaction.  It only seems just that a woman who devoted thirty-two years to a relationship with someone she refers to as her "soul mate" should receive some benefit from his posthumous success.  It's clear that the US is not the only society  where some are driven by greed.

Max Meltzer-Homeless No More

Posted on 16:36 by Unknown

Thanks to a diligent private detective hired by Max Meltzer's family, Meltzer will abandon his homeless wandering in Utah and reunite with his family.  David Lundberg launched a two-month search for Meltzer and eventually located him in Salt Lake Cit, pushing a shopping cart containing all of his worldly possessions in a park there Saturday.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Lundberg disclosed that Meltzer's brother died last year and left him a "significant" amount of money.  "He'll no longer be living on the street or in abandoned storage sheds.  He'll be able to have a normal life, and be able to have a home, provide for himself, and purchase clothing, food and health care."   Lundberg acted on a tip from a call into a radio station, thinking it might be just another dead end, but Meltzer was roaming Pioneer Park, as the caller said.

Meltzer's family will fly in from New York to reconcile with him, after losing all contact last September.  He wants no media contact currently, but promises to discuss the possibility of a news conference next week with his family.  He has been beaten and robbed and suffers from emotional issues.  His family wants to help him with his problems and is eager to see him again.

Meltzer's return to a more normal life will not be easy.  Years of living on the streets has left many scars invisible to the eye.  I hope this has the kind of happy ending as in Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well.  All the best, Max Meltzer.

Ham on Wry Award-Obnoxious Commuter

Posted on 14:07 by Unknown

A female passenger riding a Metro-North train out of New York evidently needs help from Miss Manners in using proper eitquette when riding the rails.  A fellow passenger posted a video Tuesday on YouTube (link below), captured on a cell phone during this woman's interaction with one of the conductors.  The conductor approached the woman and requested that she speak quietly and stop using profanity or move to the vestibule to continue the conversation.  The woman responded by saying, "Do you know what schools I've been to?"  As the conductor explained what happened to a fellow conductor, the passenger grew increasingly boisterous and intruded on the conversation between the two conductors.

The irate woman asked what profanity she had used, and, if I heard correctly, the conductor mentioned the f-bomb. The woman interrupted, "I'm sorry.  Do you think I'm a little hoodlum?"  My response would have been, "No, I think you're an extremely rude, self-aborbed woman totally lacking in courtesy!"  Unfortunately, I did not have that opportunity.  To the conductor's credit, she still spoke in a calm voice when she then infomred the woman she'd be removed from the train, if she didn't return to her seat.  The woman loudlyproclaimed she wanted to get off the train and demanded her money back.

The conductors walked away and one said, "Go to customer service."  In her loudest voice, the passenger whined, "I am not a crazy person.  I am a very well-educated person."  After a minute or so, a conductor announced that passengers should please not use profanity on the train, "especially those people who went to Harvard or Yale or are from Westport."  In my view, that takes the prize for best part of the story.

This woman might have attended a top-notch university, but she obviously missed the course on politeness.  She had the audacity to say that she was having a private conversation when she used the questionable language.  Excuse me!  Private?  When every passenger on that train car was subjected to her loud voice and questionable language, the word private is a misnomer.  If she wanted privacy, she should have waited until she was alone to have the conversation.  Score one for the train conductors!

Middle Class Morphs into Public Enemy #1

Posted on 17:27 by Unknown
According to many state legislatures and Congress, America's middle class bears much of the blame for everything wroing in society today.  The economic debacle, astronomical health care costs, public education problems, and countless other societal ills exist because attorneys, teachers, firefighters, police, and other nefarious groups have caused them.  Wisconsin, New Jersey, Ohio, Michigan, Florida among others, have enacted laws that sharply reduce the numbers  and benefits of public employees.  Certain congressional members (readers know who I mean) have labeled the new health care law Obamacare, implying that evil lurks in the very thought of universal health care.  Those pesky citizens have done it this time!  They want access to health care when sick and preventive care when not.  What will they want next?  Freedom from unscrupulous politicians?

God forbid that we should examine the responsibility of large insurance companies, banks, investment firms, corporations that outsource to other countries, and politicians for having a role in this mess.  The problems our country faces are complex, and blame can't be assigned to just one faction.  All of us share in the responsibility.  Fund managers create funds that even they can't understand, with hedge funds among the worst of them.  Insurance companies gladly sell policies and use the proceeds to pay their top management outrageous salaries and bonuses, but balk when its time to pay legitimate claims.  Corporations reward their top eschelon with compensation packages that place far too much emphasis on their contributions to success, while at the same time ignoring the contributions of those on the front lines.  Many Americans pay little attention to the workings of government until something goes awry.  In the last presidential election, only 62% of registered voters cast a vote.  Shameful!  The statistics grow progressively worse in state and local elections.  So, what must we do?

Write and call the politicians making choices for us.  Do this for both those with whom we agree and those we don't.  Vote in every election.  Read and view independent news sources.  Watch different channels each night for evening news.  If accessible, watch Canadian channels and BBC America.  Read non-fiction books about the economy, government, business, and finance, in order to lay claim to the "informed citizen" label.  And remember, the middle class isn't the enemy.  As written in Pogo, a comic strip that offered political satire, "We have met the enemy, and he is us."  Enough said!  If interested, access the link below for a short video about the importance of a thriving middle class.

America's Schizophrenic Take on Abortion

Posted on 17:56 by Unknown
The First Amendment to the US Constitution states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."  From that sentence, various interpretations have evolved with respect to the role religion can play in government.  Given the Bill of Rights in its entirety, how abortion became an issue for the Supreme Court to decide still mystifies me?

We live in a culture that embodies almost every religion in the world, yet abortion opponents expect our citizens to act in a single-minded fashion with respect to a woman's right to have an abortion.  Doesn't that constitute an infringement on the woman's right to choose whether to continue the pregnancy?  Will the so-called pro-lifers, then, step in and ensure that children born to women who wanted to abort are fed, clothed, and cared for in a healthy manner?  The answer to that is a resounding no.  They cite the commandment "Thou Shalt Not Kill," as the reason they object to abortion.  Here's where the schizophrenia most directly applies.  Do they also object to killing enemy soldiers in war or harming innocent bystanders in an air raid?  Perhaps some do, but most don't see an association between the two.  Both constitute killing in their minds, but one is acceptable (killing in war); the other is not (abortion).  The fact that some people justify the murder of doctors who perform abortions illustrates the absolute insanity surrounding the abortion issue.  The same people who quote "Thou shalt not kill" must have forgotten that the Bible also has this passage: "Vengeance is mine," sayeth the Lord.  Therefore, if one believes in a literal Bible, s/he would leave the doctor's punishment to God.

I have a suggestion for all pro-lifers.  Stop wasting your time on abortion and work on child advocacy.  Child abuse, child pornography, child abandonment, child trafficking--all of these and more damage and kill thousands of children each year.  Spend your time on children who are already born and suffer in the hands of parents who don't want them and treat them like chattel.  If people believes in the value of life, as pro-lifers say they do, then should they not value the life of all children who are alive?  I rest my case.  Schizophrenia reigns!

Thinly-veiled Racial Slurs on Obama

Posted on 09:59 by Unknown
Forwarded e-mails about Obama have proliferated, since he announced his candidacy for president in February 2007.  The latest one I received touched a nerve, and, voila, today's blog subject emerged.  A friend sent me an e-mail, Obama's Visit to Russia. The attached video purported to show a receiving line of Russian leaders refusing to shake President Obama's hand as he passed.  That, along with verbiage lambasting ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC for not reporting this incident, spurred me to investigate further on snopes.com to determine its validity.  Readers, did you notice the lack of Fox in that list?  Anything Rupert Murdoch owns weould have featured that video ad infinitum, if it could have been subestantiated.

Surprise, surprise!  The message was proven false.  Someone had used video editing to create the impression that President Obama had been snubbed.  Do you suppose that person might be a closet racist?  Just the number and frequency of these types of messages bears some introspection on the part of those who heap them on us.  I've received countless messages about the fact that Obama is really a Muslim, that he was not born in the US  (I guess some of our citizens didn't realize Hawaii was a bona fide state by the time he was born), and countless other claims, none of which were true.

To those who give birth to these messages--Stop!  To those who forward them without checking their validity--Stop!  To those who believe that everything Obama does is fodder for attacking him--Stop!  Our country was founded on principles many have forgotten.  People came here to escape various types of persecution, and all of us have ancestors that came from another country, unless we're 100% American Indian.  We're founded on notions of freedom and fairness. It's far past time to get on with the business at hand and stop the ridiculous, unfounded attacks on Obama.  Give it a rest and get a life!

Ham on Wry Award-A Thumb's Up to Diane Ravitch

Posted on 18:43 by Unknown

Diane Ravitch, NYU Research Professor

At last, a refreshingly honest person who admits her former advocacy for increased standardized testing, more accountability, and less fluff in the classroom as Assistant Secretary of Education under Papa Bush took us down the wrong path.  An article in the June 9, 2011 edition of the St. Petersburg Times buried on the last page of the local/state/business section almost escapted my attention. I didn't immediately recognize her name, but remembered her views when I read that article. I wager that most readers still don't recognize her. You would if you had ever taught school. She helped to usher in an era of educational reform that has duped the American public into believing that standardized tests work miracles for students. Wrong!

Tom Marshall, the Times staff writer who penned the article quoted Ravitch. "Particularly in Florida, it's a disaster (referring to standardized testing in particular).  What we are doing is killing creativity, originality, divergent thinking.  All the things we need in the 21st century are what we're squeezing out of a generation of children."  Hallelujah and amen! We already see the effects of this kind of emphasis in the automatons that serve in the Florida legislature who are products of this short-sighted method.  Original thinking?  I don't think so.  We have dutiful robots who dare not speak out against the party to which they belong.

She referred to Florida Governor Rick Scott's policy on charter schools and vouchers indicative of a "monstrous regime aimed at expanding business opportunities in the for-profit education world."  She singled him out because she was speaking to the Times editorial board, but the same indictment could be brought against the governors of Wisconsin, Michigan, and New Jersey as well.  Teachers across the country are taking early retirement in droves rather than face the ridiculous nonsense heaped on them by ill-informed politicans.

Any effective teacher uses a variety ot measurements to determine student progress.  Standardized tests are just one of the tools employed.  Judging from the kinds of communication I receive from supposedly well-educated college graduates, I see a huge gap in teaching writing skills.  No standardized test ever developed accurately measures a person's ability to write effectively, because it takes more than correct grammar and snytax to do so.  The last sentence in Marshall's article leaves the reader with a chilling quote from Ms. Ravitch.  "These are people (teachers) who don't come into education motivated by merit pay.  Our society is disrespecting them en masse.  Bravo, Ms. Ravitch!  You have distilled the chaotic approach to education down to its most fundamental flaw.  Disrespect.  (See yesterday's post on respect.)

For more information on the subject of education in America, read Bridging Differences, a blog on Ed Week: http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/Bridging-Differences/.  Then, write a note or call a teacher who made a positive impact on you.

"Why Can't We Be Friends?"

Posted on 19:27 by Unknown

Kasi and Mtani at Busch Gardens in April
Meet Kasi (One With Speed) and Mtani (Close Friend), two best friends living in perfect harmony at Busch Gardens, Tampa, Florida.  Kasi's mother couldn't care for him, so the Jacksonville Zoo sent him to Busch Gardens because of plans to open a cheetah exhibit along with a new rollercoaster called Cheetah Hunt. Mtani joined him a few weks later to keep him company because he would not have fared well with the older cheetahs.

Remember the Stevie Wonder song Ebony and Ivory? It suits this situation perfectly and can serve as a reminder to humans how much we botch relationships with people who differ markedly from us.  What am I saying?  We botch all kinds of relationships, whether with friends, family, lovers, strangers, or enemies. If  two different species can form a lasting bond, why do we humans fail so miserably at it?

Republicans and Democrats could learn many lessons from these two pals. According to Julie Scardina, Animal Ambassador for Busch Gardens and Sea World, Kasi and Mtani will have a lifelong friendship, which I am certain with be free of disappointment.  Kasi realizes that Mtani is a dog and vice versa, but Julie emphasize that they have learned to respect each other.  Wow!  What a concept!  Respect! That term doesn't apply to Congress currently.  It is also sorely lacking in businesses who have forgotten to show respect ot their clients and customers.  As Aretha sang,  R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me.

Thank you, Kasi and Mtani, for setting an example and reminding us about the importance of courtesy.

Delta Charges Returning Soldiers Baggage Fees

Posted on 17:48 by Unknown
Soldiers returning from Afghanistan Tuesday were charged $200 for one piece of extra baggage at the Baltimore Airport on their connecting flight to Atlanta.  They paid their own money for these charges, although the Defense Department usually reimuburses such fees.  Getting the money back isn't the point here, now is it?  After they have spent many months and sometimes longer with their lives in peril, did Delta really need the money so badly that they had to follow the rule that no one informed these special passengers about? Thirty-four soldiers flew on that plane, and the total out-of-pocket cost amounted to $2800.  Perhaps the CEO could have anted up that money to save the soldiers added stress.

Some of the disgruntled group posted a YouTube video that received 200,000 hits before it was pulled.  No information was available about who pulled it.  Patrick Murphy, a former Demoncartic Congressman from PA who served in Iraq, observed,  "Here you have these heroes who have fought for our country overseas ... to come home to the $200 charge per soldier? It’s outrageous.”

Joe Davis, a spokesman for the Veterans of Foreign Wars' Washington office, told the AP, "A $200 bill for extra baggage by a government-contracted airline is the worst welcome home any soldier could receive." We know this is a business issue and that the troops will be reimbursed if they are authorized additional baggage in their orders, but the shock of even being charged is enough to make most servicemen and women simply shake their heads and wonder who or what it is they are protecting."

Evidently, viewers who watched the NBC Nightly News Tuesday or saw the video agreed with both Murphy and Davis. Earlier today, a Facebook page titled Boycott Delta for Soldiers appeared.  All the flack prompted Delta to issue an apology and change its policy for soldiers traveling economy.  They can now check four bags with no fees. No word on whether the soldiers affected by the extra fees received personal apologies and refunds.

The airline's apology did little to rectify the situation. Delta not only made a huge mistake, it also created a public relations nightmare for itself. No amount of apologizing can make up for its lack of compassion for those servicemen. Congratulations to those involved. The $2800 you gained will most likely result in a net loss of millions, as the traveling public scrambles to find other carriers.

Anthony Weiner Guily of Extreme Stupidity

Posted on 18:22 by Unknown

Anthony Weiner finally admitted yesterday that he lied about the circumstances pertaining to a lewd picture of a male's bulging pants sent via Twitter to a Seattle college student and five other internet strangers.  Prior to Monday, he claimed that someone hacked his account and sent the photo without his knowledge.  Why would a man with the constant public exposure a member of the House of Representatives has delude himself into thinking that the truth would not eventually come to light?  Did he practice some kind of magical thinking that he would be immune from intense media scrutiny?

Weiner would have fared better if he had just admitted his transgressions when the news first broke,  but he is not the only politician to lie about having an affair before eventually confessing.  In fact, that approach is quite popular, and I'd venture a guess that 100% of all politicians whose affairs become media fodder lie when first confronted.  This holds true for both parties, and we have had ample evidence of that over the past twenty years.  The total list of cheaters,  in both heterosexual and homosexual affairs, would take far too much space to include in this post.  If you've forgotten names, do an internet search.

Given that Facebook and Twitter leave users vulnerable to discovery, I can't imagine why anyone would choose to get his jollies using them.  Otherwise intelligent people happily text, tweet, and voicemail their innermost sexual desires as though no one except the desired targets could ever discover their messages.  We'll never see the day when sex scandals disappear, but c'mon Mr. Weiner.  Does the word discretion ring a bell with you?  You have a problem.  Your ego overshadows your brain.  Keep your pants zipped, remain fully clothed, and use Twitter only for public announcements.  If you stay clean, maybe your constituents will eventually forget about your stupidity.

Sarah Palin's Vain Attempt to Excuse Her Paul Revere Account

Posted on 17:46 by Unknown

Sarah Palin's understanding of American history differs radically from mine--well, from most well-educated Americans actually.  The following quote from the NY Daily News was her verbatim response to a reporter's question about what she had seen on her trip to Boston.  "We saw where Paul Revere hung out as a teenager, which was something new to learn. And, you know, he who warned the British that they weren't gonna be takin' away our arms by ringing those bells and making sure as he's riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free."  How eloquently stated!

Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2011/06/05/2011-06-05_sarah_palin_defends_paul_revere_comments_i_know_my_american_history.html#ixzz1OXphsQhe

To make matters much worse, Palin tried to defend the accuracy of her comments in the following quote I obtained from The Canadian Press online, "Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there. That, hey, you're not going to succeed. You're not going to take American arms. You are not going to beat our own well-armed persons, individual, private militia that we have." She added. "He did warn the British."

If you believe that garbage, please don't vote in the next election, and don't use Wikipedia to check the facts.  Since she made that ridiculous gaffe last Thursday, Wikipedia was inundated with new entries supporting her version.  So many changes occurred Sunday and Monday that the site now has a padlock, making it extremely difficult to alter anything.  Serioulsy folks, ample historical data exist to detail the actual account of Paul Revere's famous ride to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams about their impending arrest by British soldiers.  After warning the two in Lexington, Revere was eventually joined by William Dawes and later, Dr. Samuel Prescott on a ride to Concord where weapons and supplies had been stashed.  Use the following link, which also explains the lantern system Revere used.  http://www.paulreverehouse.org/ride/real.html.

Palin and her avid supporters have hit a new low with all of this.  Take it on the chin, Sarah.  Own up to your mistake.  To those misguided people who believe that rewriting history will save their beloved Sarah--Give it up!  How low can you go?  Do we really want someone in office that doesn't know one of the most famous stories from the Revoltionary War?  For anyone who still wants to defend her, go back and read her quotes.  Find a more informed, articulate candidate to support and get on with your life.

Ham on Wry Award-Revisited

Posted on 08:35 by Unknown

Phillip and Nancy Garrido-Jaycee Dugard's Abductors

Due to some difficulties with Friday's post, this blog didn't appear on Facebook.  Bear with me readers.  These two received exactly what they deserved within the limits of the law despite Nancy Garrido's defense attorney stating that she really thought of Jaycee and her two daughters as family.  No matter what Garrido's feelings, she failed to protect an innocent 11-year-old from sexual assault and 18 years of captivity.  Phillip Garrido can offer no valid defense for his reprehensible act.  Read the orginal post that follows.

Ham on Wry proudly presents this week's award to Jaycee Dugard for her courage and conviction during her eighteen-year hell in captivity. Yesterday, the judge sentenced Phillip Garrido to 431 years to life, the maximum sentence allowed, and Nancy Garrido to 36 years to life for her role in the kidnapping and repeated rape of Jaycee during her imprisonment in the backyard of their home in Antioch, CA. Ms. Dugard refused to attend the hearing, writing in a statement read by her mother, ""I chose not to be here today because I refuse to waste another second of my life in your presence." In saying that her abductors had stolen her life, she expressed her feelings about spending18 years of her life held against her will.

No amount of time in prison can possibly restore what Jaycee lost when she was kidnapped at the age of 11. No graduations, proms, parties, family picnics and vactions, or holiday celebrations occurred with her birth family there for support. Instead, she bore two children fathered by her rapist. The first came when Jaycee was just 14 and the second 4 years later. The worst part of this crime was revealed during the trial. It could have been prevented because Garrido was on parole for kidnapping and rape when he abducted Dugard. According to the district attorney, Garrido should never has been released from prison.

No room for humor exists in writing aboutt this heinous crime, so readers will notice the absence of wryness in the post. Although Nancy Garrido did not sexually assault Jaycee Dugard, she aided and abetted her husband. He even left for a month, giving her ample opportunity to summon help for Jaycee, but she didn't. Some readers might wonder why Jaycee didn't try to escape as she got older. By then, she was so thoroughly controlled emotionally that she saw no way out, and, once she had children, she worried about their welfare. Now that the trial has ended, may Ms. Dugard thrive in her freedom from terror. I wonder how Phillip Garrido will fare in prison. He'll have many years of his own hell on earth, of that I'm certain.

Economic Gains Fizzle as Unemployment Stagnates

Posted on 16:57 by Unknown
Before writing this post, I offer a disclaimer.  I am not a political pundit, nor do I aspire to be one.  However, I am a committed citizen, who reads prolifically on both sides of an issue.  In preparation for today's topic, I have read several articles by financial gurus and economists, and I have reached some conclusions of my own.  First, it seems the Republican Party has a schizophrenic approach to improving the economy.  They tout an austere method of balancing the budget that includes slashing budgets for education, police and fire protection, child welfare services, and existing health benefits.  In addition, some states, like Florida, have changed the retirement system so that public employees will contribute to their own retirement.  Some Republicans even suggest that we should wipe out the retirement system in its current form, and, instead, establish something akin to a 401 (k) so that workers will choose their investments.  Bad idea!  Even savvy investors were taken by the likes of Bernie Madoff.  Some instruments are so complex, the people who sell them don't truly understand what they're selling.  I know that for a fact, because it happened to me.  At the same time, Republicans insist on maintaining tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.  Does that make sense to you?

On what basis, then, does the Republican Party have grounds to criticize President Obama for the achingly slow economic recovery?  Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength are demanding to pay higher taxes.  They confess that they do not use the money saved by lower taxes to add jobs.  They spend it on themselves and their families.  This group does criticize Obams for capitulating to Republicans in 2010 and extending the cuts for two more years.  Hey, guys!  He was making little headway with Republicans firmly entrenched in keeping the cuts forever.  Let's place responsiblity where it lies.  President Bush touted this plan as a sitmulus for the economy.  Guess what?  It didn't work, and it won't for the very reason expressed a few sentences ago.  A line from Network, a movie released in 1976, seems appropriate for this situation.  "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it any more!"  Does that ring a bell?

I don't have enough data to call jobs creation a zero sum gain, but we will certainly not alleviate unemployment by cutting jobs that already exist.  Florida's esteemd governor turned down money for a high-speed rail, thereby eliminating the possiblity for approximately 20,000 well-paying jobs.  Some of that money went to Michigan, as one reader commented last week, where they celebrated its positive impact.  It seems to me that Republicans are focused not on jobs creation, but on preserving the class divide.  Many of their ideas affect poor people most adversely, and, surpise, the middle class, what's left of it, does not benefit from any of their economic proposals.  Readers owe it to themselves to research how the middle class has shrunk over the last thirty years, and, in turn, how much of the wealth in this country is now concentrated in the top 1% of our population.  Get ready for a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach, if you haven't seen these figures before.!

On one topic, most pundits agree.  It will take years for the economy to rebound unless we stop budget cuts that hurt those who have already been sucker-punched by the econmic meltdown and the resulting mess that followed.  Wake up people!  We can't afford to do nothing.  Write your legislators, members of Congress, and the President, and then make plans to visit some of them personally, so that they can hear your voice.  Balancing the budget is important, but not at the expense of our most vulnerable citizens--children.  They have no voice, yet they will determine the future for all of us.  Isn't it time that we place them as our top priority?

The Odd Couple: Trump and Palin

Posted on 12:03 by Unknown

Times Square gawkers might have glimpsed Donald Trump and his wife accompanied by Sarah Palin, her parents, and youngest daughter, arriving in a stetch limo to dine at a local pizza restaurant Tuesday.  If that doesn't constitute an odd pairing, I cant't imagine what would.  Trump lives in an ostentatious penthouse in Manhattan and has enjoyed a high-profile existence for most of his life.  Palin presents as a country girl who loves hunitng, fishing, and a more down-to-earth lifestyle.  It's rather like The Beverly Hillbillies meet Richie Rich.  What could they possibly have in common?  Apparently a mutual admiration society.

In response to a reporter's question, Palin responded, "What do we have in common? Our love for this country, a desire to see our economy put back on the right track."  Since she speaks mainly in genralities rather than specifics, that leaves me wondering how she would improve the economy, especially since Alaska is one of the few states that has no money woes.  She added that Trump and she share a similar world view.  Does that mean that he can see Russia from his three-story penthouse?

As for Trump, when asked if he would support Palin for President, he stated, "She didn't ask me for that. She came up as friends.  She's a great woman, a terrific woman and a terrific friend. I'd love her to run."  I pale at the vision of those two joining forces in the next election.  On the one hand, we have a person who has limited interaction with foreign nations.  When she ran for Vice-President in 2008, she had visited just three foreign nations. As governor of Alaska, Palin had little experience with the state's cross-border issues and obtained her first passport in 2006.  As mentioned in a previous blog, I shudder at the thought of her interacting with other members of the G8.  She would have difficulty following the complexities discussed at those meetings.

Do us all a favor, Donald and Sarah.  Stick with entertainment.  That world allows ample space for your insatiable desire for media coverage.
