Mississippi’s
Proposed Amendment 26
"The term 'person' or 'persons' shall include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof."
Ham on Wry fervently believes every woman in this country should feel chills at the prospect of the so-called "Personhood Amendment" passing tomorrow in Mississippi. The United States was established on the basis of religious freedom. Many of our first inhabitants came here to escape religious persecution in their countries of birth. As if we don't have enough to worry about in this country, a group of Christians touts this amendment as following God's laws. America is supposed to have a division of church and state, and this amendment, if passed, means that all of the women in Mississippi must abide by it. The group behind "Yes for 26" wants to challenge Roe v. Wade, which allows women the right to have an abortion.
Ham on Wry wrote a previous post months ago questioning why Pro-Lifers don't fight for those persons already born. In Florida, a staggering number of children die at the hands of parents or those who care for children. Where do these people plan to find the resources to oversee the progress of unborn children until they are born when our society can't handle the mess we already have with child abuse, pedophilia, and child trafficking?
No wonder "Personhood" chose the state of Mississippi to establish a basis for a Roe v. Wade challenge. Similar amendments failed twice in Colorado and have never made it to the ballot in other states where it's been attempted. Ever heard of Pastor Michael Pearl of Mississippi? He and his wife Debi wrote a self-published book on the subject of child-rearing. They tout the method "spare the rod; spoil the child" and recommend corporal punishment for children as young as six months old. Pearl evidently believes that children are lesser beings and equates them to mules when he states that he advocates the same methods that the Amish do in training the willful animals. That philosophy is truly enlightened, isn't it? So much for a loving God. That kind of thinking sets the tone for people to conveniently forget any sense of reason and allows ignorance to reign.
The strangest proponent of this amendment is Dr. Freda Bush, a Mississippi obstetrician, pictured above. In response to CNN's questions about the amendment, she said, "I can't imagine anyone who is truly pro-life not supporting or acknowledging the fact that the baby begins at conception, deserves life, has done nothing to deserve death. In rape and incest, the life that has been created during that process has done nothing to deserve death. The mother is a victim and there's no reason to make a victim a murderer." She has obviously not thought that statement through very well. The fatal flaw exists in her discounting abortion in cases of rape. Does she, therefore, feel that a fertilized egg has more rights than a woman impregnated by rape? What if the female is twelve or thirteen? Are you truly pro-life, Dr. Bush? Does pro-life include quality of life for all concerned?
Single-minded people do not make the best decision-makers for the public at large. Ham on Wry hopes that Amendment 26 fails. Devout Christians can still take heart in the biblical quote, "Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord." Abortion should remain a woman's choice.
