| Governor Rick Scott Sells Doughnuts to Customers |
Florida Governor Rick Scott sold doughnuts to patrons of Nicola's Donuts and Bakery in Tampa last Wednesday in an apparent effort to boost his dismal approval ratings. Ham on Wry believes that Scott appears more comfortable in this role than he does in the governor's seat. He's had a lot to learn since he took office in January. He's finally discovered that he couldn't hold closed-door meetings with anyone of his choosing without violating Florida's Sunshine Law that dictates open meetings must be held when state business is discussed. Readers might find it interesting that Florida voters elected a governor who takes pride in the fact that he doesn't read Florida newspapers and found it distasteful when he realized that he was required to sign his first death warrant for an execution August 2nd. Ham on Wry suggests that a standardized test might be necessary to determine whether a candidate qualifies for office in Florida. If high students must do so to graduate under state law, why not require one for those who make decisions for our state? Just asking.
As for Scott's approval rating, he did have a 6% rise from 29% to 35% following his doughnut adventure. However, Ham on Wry hopes that voters don't change their minds as easily as the poll suggests, based on superficial acts. Scott's handlers tightly control his exposure to anyone who isn't a supporter, so it's possible the customers at Nicola's had been screened before entering. Even if that didn't happen, Scott had a long counter to protect him from disgruntled citizens. Doughnut Boy's journey into the real world might have exposed him to some harsh truths. He has angered many people in this state, especially educators, environmentalists, and groups that oversee voting rights and registration. Selling doughnuts doesn't erase all the damage he's done thus far in his administration. One can only hope that he will see the error of his ways before the next legislative session
