| Nicole Kissel on Left Was First to Respond to "Dale" Ostrander's, on right, Calls for Help |
Last Friday, Charles "Dale" Ostrander met Nicole Kissel under strange circumstances, and he wouldn't be alive today had she not risked her life to try and save him from drowning. Nicole was bodyboarding in the Pacific off the coast of Long Beach, Washington, when she heard repeated cries for help. She immediately turned her board and paddled toward him, as her father shouted his concerns about the rip tide. When she reached Dale, also twelve, she slipped off the board and managed to get him aboard. For a moment, Nicole entertained thoughts of dying, but Dale urged her on.
With no warning, a wave slammed into them, knocking both back into the water and pushing them to the bottom. Nicole pushed Dale to the surface, but he disappeared from view when she reached the board. At that point, Nicole's father, Shanon, pulled her to safety. A rescue team led by Eddie Mendez, a volunteer water rescuer, arrived and eventually located Dale. Mendez got Dale to the beach where emergency responders gave him CPR, but his pulse didn't return until they reached the hospital. Without Nicole's quick action, Dale would have drowned because he couldn't swim.
Ham on Wry gives a big "thumb's up" to Nicole, who placed herself in grave danger without giving it a second thought. She visited Dale in the hospital the day after his rescue, and he managed a few words of thanks, although he was still not completely out of danger. Doctors expect him to make a full recovery.
