Those of us who live in Florida have the great fortune of an overwhelminlgy conservative legislature with a veto-proof Republican majority. Yes, ladies and gentelemen, the current legislative session offers bills such as one that requires welfare recipeients to take drug tests and pass before they receive their checks. Mind you, the Republicans have vowed to slash the budget, so I am wondering where they will get the money to hire people who will verify the drug test results and coordinate welfare payments based on that information.
In another stunning proposal known as the "Open Carry" bill, Republican legislators have proposed that those who have licenses to carry can openly display their guns. What a great idea! As difficult as this might be to believe, police organizations and proponents of common sense with respect to gun legislation think this would interfere with the police doing their jobs effectively. How, exactly, would police determine which people involved in a dispute have a license to carry and which ones don't, they ask? Obviously, the legislators have greater experience and knowledge when it comes to law enforcement than those who get paid to do it every day. The fact that they sit in Tallahasse makes their judgment superior to all who cry "foul!"
These examples prove the level of commitment the Florida Legislature has to citizens and its duty to promote their welfare. I know I'll feel much safer knowing that welfare recipients are being tested for drugs while those making the laws don't have to submit to that violation of the Fourth Amendment. I will also sleep much more peacefully at night, secure in the knowledge that anyone who breaks into my home carrying a gun will most likely have a permit to carry.
Anyone want to move to Florida?
